CAUSE OF FOOD SECURITY IN THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN
The cuisine is defined as the sustenance of the people of a specific region,
lifestyle, and culture; belonging to specific families. This covers the main
food groups, staple food (such as fish or poultry), desserts, and local
specialties. A meal includes nutritious, salable, nutritive, used organically,
a nourishing treat, and more. It is a convention of the food system to be
dependent upon foodstuffs to keep the population healthy; obtain reliable
income, and keep dignity. Food is an essential source of nutrition for a
person. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations
Development Programme, and many other non-profit organizations, global
nutritional malnutrition is increasing and that is where food insecurity
becomes a thing. This is defined as the conditions in which people go hungry
and fall ill due to a lack of nutrients.
For example, the UN (2015) released an international survey, which found
that 1.3 million children under age 5 are stunted by stunting. Oftentimes, at
the end of the day, the safe food at school is exhausted; this can lead to the
lack of child nutrition and illnesses. The health and nutritional goals of
children are hindered because of poor dietary security: nutrition gated by
insecurity.
The research conducted by the WHO and the Food and Nutrition Foundation
revealed that the source of food insecurity varies. Access to food is
classified by household income, household size, the diet of members in the
household, accessibility to urban food outlets, and neighborhood food
availability. It was noted that areas of endemic food insecurity often exist in
times when levels of poverty and food insecurity are on the rise, and in this
order.
Notably, quantitative and qualitative data indicate that food
insecurity is not linked to gender or socioeconomic status. The fact that
female householders are more vulnerable than males is common. Women and
children are more affected. It is because women are two-thirds of the household labor
force; therefore, they are affected more by high rates of child labor. In an
article written by Jaffrey (2004), it is stated that a World Bank study
considered female labor force participation and found it was at 14% for
households with women in the household. In contrast, there were only 10% rates
in households with men in the household.
The World Bank opined that although most families have access to at
least one source of food, households with two or more dependents in the family
were almost eight times more likely to experience food insecurity. This is what
the World Bank opined in regards to it.
Nevertheless, the UN (2007) also determined the six types of food
insecurity, which include food insecurity accompanied by high annual energy expenditure and hunger. From this paper, for women, women households have a
higher amount of food energy expenditures than men households. This is due to
the fact that women are breadwinners in many households; therefore, a pregnant
woman will require higher energy expenditures than a person who is lactating.
For women who have children, the research in 2007 found that more than 50% of
homes where a primary breadwinner was a woman and children under the age of
five were food insecure.
Food security is a term used to describe the lack of food for the entire community of the world.
